About MeEric Berryman painted this work 20 years ago, using old images of the Thermopylae and the harbour of Aberdeen around Regent Quay. Possibly this vessel was the most famous of all the great sailing clippers, and rival to the Cutty Sark which it beat twice in the great 'tea races' of the latter decades of the 19th century.

The work shows Thermopylae's Indian Teak hull painted in its original green, gold and white livery. The vessel is also shown as a fully rigged ship. The ship was later reduced to a barque rig, reducing speed, but also reducing the number of crew required to sail it.

The first voyage of the Thermopylae was from Aberdeen to London beginning on 21st September 1868 skippered by William Edward. The cargo, was granite and whisky two of the regular exports out of the city at the time.
More About Me
The "Thermopylae", built in Aberdeen for fast transport, especially that of tea from China, ended her days in Portugal as target practice for their navy.
