About MeThis is the original half hull model for the Thermopylae made at Hoods Yard in Aberdeen prior to constructing the ship. The builder would then meet with the customer and agree that that was indeed the form of ship they were seeking.Such models were scaled down versions of the final shape that the ribs of the hull of the vessel was to be in reality. By accurately measuring the lines on the model and scaling them up, it was possible for the builders to arrive at the desired full size hull shape.
When building a ship, after the keel has been laid, a frame of ribs are then constructed and the planking that forms the hull proper attached to the resulting frame.The actual planking could be very thick Half hulls gave the shape the different frames would take depending upon where they were in the hull. So when we look at such models we should remember that actual ship was larger as the model gave the interior size and the planking may have been up to 20cm thick or more.
