About MeFirst commercially available in 1990 this ultra sound machine measured the density of bone at a patient's heel thus giving a measure of osteoporosis. The technique was developed by Chris. Langton of Doncaster and Richard Porter (who later became Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Aberdeen). The patient's heel was placed in a water bath, with a little detergent added to aid reading, and the result was displayed on a computer screen. The Osteoporosis Unit was originally based at the City Hospital but transferred to Woolmanhill in 1995. At time of writing (2004) 10 manufacturers now offer similar machines.
