His inspiration for this work came from a surfing trip to Cruden Bay, taken on a particularly warm late summer day in 2004. The sitter is Laura Dixon, the artist's sister-in-law. Shankland signed the work with his monogram - seen as a symbol on the surfboard which cuts the composition in two.
