About MeIn this early work, Samuel John Peploe experiments with new ways of approaching subjects. The muted colours and free brushwork are characteristic of his early portraiture.

Though the colours may recall seventeenth century Dutch portraiture, the handling of the paint is altogether more flexible. The boy's features and clothes are suggested rather than copied, but this does not detract from the intimacy of the work.
