About MeFrère's small compositions were avidly collected by the middle class of his day. This example of childhood activities demonstrates their obvious appeal. It also shows Frère's skill in depicting children. Their expressions convey their determination in getting the cart, with its little passenger, up the hill.Frère's genre scenes follow the example set by members of the Barbizon School of painters who broke away from the subject matter and style of the previous century to acclaim the rise of the French peasant. Historical and mythological scenes were replaced by subjects of everyday people.
More About Me
A super picture of children at play - the action is so well represented, and you can almost feel the effort in pulling the cart!
