About MeThe style of the Scottish Colourist George Leslie Hunter was governed by his many travels in Italy (where he studied the old masters) and in France. Like the other three Colourists - S.J. Peploe, F.C.B. Cadell and J.D. Fergusson - he was greatly influenced by the French post-Impressionist use of colour. He particularly admired the 'Fauves' and compared his work to that of Matisse.

This sketch is probably a scene of the south coast of France and it sparkles with a Mediterranean 'joie de vivre'. The main masses of the trees, house and boats are described in watercolour using bold, thick squiggles, whilst the lightness of the washes lends a fresh, light and harmonious feel to the painting.
