About MeThere is no exact date of Hunter's arrival in the South of France but it was probably near the end of 1926. He rented a small studio a few miles north of Nice and using this as his base painted in numerous locations along the Mediterranean coast, one of them was Villefranche-sur-mer, a harbour town. The quayside at Villefranche was one of his favourite painting locations (along with the Cafe at Cassis and the beach at Jaun-les-Pins) and the scene is repeated in several works.

The South of France triggered a development in Hunter's treatment of light and atmosphere and his application of paint became thinner and thinner in order to achieve a more vibrant and luminous effect.
