About MeArtist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham (1912-2004) spent her time traveling from her hometown in Scotland and St. Ives, the artist colony she moved to in 1940. St. Ives was the center of the Modern art movement in Britain. Modern art was a style that artists followed in which they rejected traditional and classical formal elements of fine art. When Barns-Graham moved to St. Ives, she founded the Penworth Society of Art with her friends Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, two other famous British artists.

This work titled Assisi, Evening (1955) was painted after the artist won the Italian Government traveling award for professional artists. With her use of colour and her free flowing lines, she is able to capture the warm glow of an evening in Italy.
