About MeLike many designer silversmiths, Appleby works in collaboration with other craftsmen to realise his designs. In 1988 he began a series of silver bowls and cups with folded rims and 18ct gold beads. These were soldered on to the flat surface of the metal, which was subsequently raised by Peter Musgrove. The final effect of this innovative technique is one of rippled, pleated texture around the rim with a quilted appearance on the vessel body. In the larger bowl the beads are applied in a random pattern, whilst the smaller cup is more regularised. Here he succeeds in making the metal behave like cloth.
