About MeMalcolm Appleby prefers to work with precious metals (gold, silver and platinum) along with steel and iron. Throughout his career Appleby has pushed metal working to its limits, discovering new ways of handling and decorating his raw material. This highly individualistic approach to metals is enhanced by a confident and expressive line, often enhanced by detailed evocative engraving.
Like many designer silversmiths, Appleby works in collaboration with other craftsmen to realise his designs. In 1988 he began a series of silver bowls and cups with folded rims and 18ct gold beads. These were soldered on to the flat surface of the metal, which was subsequently raised by Peter Musgrove. The final effect of this innovative technique is one of rippled, pleated texture around the rim with a quilted appearance on the vessel body. In the larger bowl the beads are applied in a random pattern, whilst the smaller cup is more regularised. Here he succeeds in making the metal behave like cloth.

More About Me
How do you think this bowl was made? The flat sheet of metal was raised to create the rippled texture around the rim and the quilted appearance on the body.
