About MeJohn Smith was a local artist, born around 1844. The sketchbook is inscribed 'John Smith, Aberdeen School of Art' and features seascapes, full length figures, head and shoulder portraits and notes and diagrams on perspective. These fragments of labelled views and people would have been used in his larger landscape works, created in his studio. It also includes two more detailed portraits of the well known soprano Carlotta Patti (1835-1889) and Reverend James Foote. Smith died in 1911.
