About MePress announcement from Sydney newspaper in February 1864 which refers to the dinner held by the passengers from the WALTER HOOD . They organised it at Sydney in honour of Capt. James Pirie to thank him for a safe and comfortable passage to Australia from London. There is also a reply from Cpt Pirie thanking the passengers for the invitation and for the 'token of their esteem'.
Long distance voyages were often plagued by severe weather, life in cramped quarters, illness breaking out amongst passengers and crew and other perils. The safe arrival in port after such a voyage was usually a time of celebration and thanks especially by the passengers, many of whom the voyage was their first experience of sailing.
