About MePrince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (Arthur William Patrick Albert) was a member of the British Royal Family who served as the Governor General of Canada.

He was born the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and was educated by private tutors before entering the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich at age 16. After graduating, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the British Army, where he served in various parts of the British Empire for nearly 40 years. During this time he also became the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, and the Earl of Sussex.

He was appointed as Governor General of Canada in 1911 by his nephew, King George V. This was on the recommendation of H. H. Asquith, the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Arthur performed various roayl duties in the United Kingdom and India later in life, while also again taking up military duties. He retired from public life in 1928, but continued to be a presence in the army well into the Second World War, until just before his death in 1942.

At the time of his death, Arthur was Queen Victoria's last surviving son.
