About MePatrick Leopold Gordon
31 March 1635 – 29 November 1699
General to Tsar Peter I of Russia

Born in the hamlet of Auchleuchries, Aberdeenshire, Patrick Gordon rose to become the highest-ranking and most influential foreigner of his day in Russia. Brave, capable and resourceful, he served as a general, rear-admiral, tutor and chief advisor to the powerful Russian Tsar, Peter the Great.

At the age of 15, Patrick left his home to study in Europe but soon enlisted for military service. He entered the Tsar’s service as a soldier in 1661 and immediately helped to suppress a revolt. Over the following decades he was prominent during various campaigns and was promoted to the rank of general. The turning point in his career came in 1689 when he supported the Russian ruler in his coup against the Regent Sophia, earning him a special place in the affections of the young Tsar and setting Russia on the path to be a great power.
