Davidson, George 1872 - 1910
Aberdeen painter in oil of landscape, especially the West Highlands, and genre. Between 1905 and 1910 he travelled extensively throughout France, Holland, Belgium, Spain and North Africa, especially Morocco. Noted locally for his treatment of light and shade, frequently demonstrated in his portrayal of trees in a heavily wooded landscape. Trained for a time in Paris. Some of his early life has been likened to Gaugin's Brittany period, although his vibrant palette was adopted before he visited France. One of his most important works is Whitehills, Banff. At the time of his death he was regarded as the leading figure in the Northern Arts Club. Unfortunately his recognition has been limited by his tragically short life. His pencil studies in the classical tradition occasionally appear on the market. Exhibited 3 works at the RA including "To Invergordon" (1904), RSA (4) 1904-1908, London Salon (5), GI (8) & AAS(44), latterly from 10 Thistly Street.
