HistoryAstronomer. Born in Aberdeen and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College, he took the first photographs of the moon in 1868. He was appointed Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope in 1879 and elected Fellow of the Royal Society.
