HistoryRD LAWRENCE – International Diabetes Champion
Robert Daniel Lawrence, educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, was a University of Aberdeen medical graduate (1916) who was in London training to be a surgeon when he developed diabetes in 1920. As there was no effective treatment available, he did not expect to survive. He was in a very weak state when in 1923, insulin became available just in time to save his life. In fact, he survived for 45 more years which he largely devoted to improving the care and welfare of others living with diabetes. In 1934, with the help of the author HG Wells, he founded the Diabetic Association – now Diabetes UK and was also the founding President of the International Diabetes Federation in 1950.
The plaque was erected at the request of the local branch of Diabetes UK in 2007 outside number 10 Ferryhill Place where Lawrence was born in 1892 and lived until 1899.
