HistoryWhaler and Arctic Explorer. An innovative whaler who developed the use of new fishing grounds in the Davis Straits and established a good working relationship with the native Inuit, he pioneered techniques for over wintering in the Arctic on board ship. He is best remembered for his efforts to discover the fate of the Franklin expedition which left Britain in 1846 looking for the North-West Passage.
