Born in Aberdeen of travelling folk, she spent much of her childhood in Deeside and Perthshire, where she acquired a vast repertoire of traditional music. A folk singer of unique ability, she was made an MBE in 1968 for her contribution to Scottish traditional music and in recognition of her international fame.
