5 Queen Street John Smith's Warehouse

E30
DescriptionSite of John Smith's warehouse. A watching brief in 1988 on groundworks on the site of the warehouse recorded a substantial amount of garden soil containing a small quantity of medieval pottery. Immediately over the subsoil was a layer with heavily compacted organic remains. This seems consistent with an area which in the later 15th and 16th centuries may have been within the confines of the Franciscan Friary (NJ90NW0040), and in the earlier medieval period was probably used for dumping. The Shoe Lane coin hoard (NJ90NW0260) was found on this site in 1847.
