In the grand tradition of objets trouvé, he has assembled a group of broken car wing mirrors, collected in the Rotherhithe tunnel, which at the time he cycled through daily. The shattered glass mirrors, each slightly different in colour, have the appearance of a display of geological specimens, sparkling like slices of crystalline quartz. Their strange beauty belies the random horror of their creation - wrenched off fast moving vehicles in minor collisions and scattered on the ground in the dark tunnel, like gem stones. They are a testament to the pace of modern life and draw in the viewer's own experiences of fast traffic, but also suggest at bigger events and further associations with accidents in tunnels.
More About Me
Heim encourages us to re-evaluate the commonplace. He has reclaimed these objects from the squalor of the city, stripped away their function and invites us to look again - what do you see?
