About MeKenny Hunter's unique skill lies in the way in which he offers a contemporary take on traditional figurative sculpture. His work juxtaposes current ideas with the traditions of remembrance, triumphalism and pride that are normally associated with the medium of sculpture. Here, a Japanese teenager from the streets of Harajuku in Tokyo, is a representative of the bizarre street fashion of that area but, with her enormous rounded platform shoes, swathed by gargantuan trouser legs, she also has the proportions of the now famous Japanese cartoon characters of Pokemon et al. She also recalls the propagandist sculpture and posters of communist China but at the same time makes reference to contemporary culture - to the world of MP3 players, Japanese street fashion and the global concerns but very private world of the teenager.
