About MeThe work of artist Alex Heim shows a preoccupation with flotsam and detritus. This film was made during a stay in Beijing in 2005 and shows a feral dog existing in the midst of a chaotic urban environment. The dog wanders on to a busy road, even settling down momentarily in the middle of the traffic. It seems inevitable that we shall witness its death. The soundtrack, which has been silent, suddenly plays a few rising chords of church music, seemingly to herald the dog's certain demise. Instead there is a reprieve and the dog wanders off. Ultimately, the stray dog is just another piece of rubbish or detritus in this contemporary urban landscape.
