About MeBill Burns learnt to fly as a Royal Air Force pilot during the Second World War, before studying drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art and at Hospitalfield in Arbroath. 'Sea Town' dates from the 1950s, a period during which he established a basic vocabulary of images: the sea, quays, boats and buildings. The artist's skill as a pilot enabled him to fly over the harbours and sea towns which were his subject matter. Burns' later compositions, with their simplicity of shape and line, give the impression that they have been inspired by aerial views.
