About MeStiven studied design at Edinburgh College of Art. His first teaching post was as a lecturer of typography. In 1958 he joined the design staff of Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and became head of design in 1992.He started to make box constructions in the late sixties. These assemblages are exquisitely constructed using a combination of found wood and wood that has been carefully whittled, honed and sanded before subtle pigments are introduced into the various grained surface textures. Although abstract, the roots of Stiven's work lie in the natural world, especially inspired by the coastal areas of Scotland.
More About Me
Can we experience a landscape through a three-dimensional structure? This assemblage of found wood and carefully selected pigments carries inspiration from the natural world.
