About MeTwickenham
Strawberry Hill. In this collection is
a portrait of Hogarth, of Sarah Malcolm,
who was hanged for murdering her
mistress - the likeness was taken
the day previous to her execution:
And it is said by Lord Oxford "that
She had put on red to look the better."
My great grandfather (Flet
cher) kept the George Dragon
Inn opposite Crofts Deep, where
Pope spent his evenings amost
The choice spritis of the day
Many of whome lived at Twick
Enham: and Lord Oxford in his
Work the ("Parish Register of Twic-
kenham") says that:
"Here Fielding met his hunter Muse
And as they quaff'd the fiery juice,
Drale nature stamp'd each lucy bit
With unimaginable wit."

In the Prosaic Parish Register
Of Twickenham it is recorded
That William the son of henry
Fielding, Esquire* and Mary
Was baptized on the 20th of
February 1747 -8- Lord Oxford
Said that Fielding at this time
Rented a house in the back lane
at Twickenham.

Twickenham is
Not mentioned in Doomesday,
It was at that time included
in the manor of Isleworth -
in ancient records the name
is written Twitham, Twit-
enham, and Twiccanham.
The most popular writers in the early part of the 18th century
Often termed the place Twitenham
(Pope and his friends for instance, and
*author of Tom Jones etc.

And the name is frequently so
Pronounced, among the lower
orders of society in the present day
(1816) -

Nordens nonsensical etymo-
logy is ridiculous - the origin
Of the name is lost.
The manor was in the hands of
the religious at a period antecedent
to the conquest.

Apl 9th. 1713. The Church
fell to the ground, leaving nothing
but the tower standing which
remains to this day. The modern
body is a brick building of the Tuscan
order, with stone caignes and
cornices - John James was the archi
tect.
The body of Alex. Pope was car-
ried to the church by six of the
poorest men in the parish, to each
of whome "I order a suit of grey coarse
cloth, as mourning."
