NORTHERNER. —Report of Thomas Owen, Master of the smack NORTHERNER, of Beaumaris, 47 tons, from Drogheda for Duddon (in ballast);—Left Drogheda Jan. 27, wind N.N.W., moderate. Proceeded, and on 28th, at 8 p.m., weather very thick, wind S, strong, ship was sailing under jib, foresail, and double-reefed mainsail, steering N.E. E. course, making for Whitehaven, as we were unable to reach Duddon consequence of the thick state of the weather. We were following a brig, which was apparently making for this port, and about 8 p.m. came up to her, and found her aground when were about a cable's length to the leeward of her. We also touched the ground. We lowered our mainsail and head sails, thinking that would prevent her from going further ashore. The sea, however, drove her higher the beach, then dropped our working anchor, but as the vessel was broadside on the sea, and rolled so much that it was unsafe to remain her, we then slipped the anchor and fathoms of chain, and let her drive on the beach stem fore meat. We remained on board until the tide turned, when found that we were ashore about two miles S.W. of Bootle. If the weather continues moderate she may be got off. Several men from Poolfoot assisted getting two the men ashore.

(Whitehaven News)

Note: Sloop rigged in Lloyd's
The length of time between the stranding and the sale of the hull suggests that there was no hope of the vessel being got off intact and that it was a fatal event despite NORTHERNER continuing in Lloyd's for three more years.
