About MeChristopher Dresser, born Glasgow 1834-1904, is known as one of the first designers for industry.
Dresser was appointed art advisor at Hukin & Heath around 1878, the date the company registered the first of his designs. The candle-holder features a nozzle to hold the candlestick and a snuffer, which also acts as a matchstick striker.

The piece dates to the period following Dresser's four month visit to Japan, 1876-1877, which had a profound impact on his design aesthetic. Prior to the trip he was preoccupied with ornamentation, but on his return he rejected ornament and focussed on form. This stylistic departure resulted in designs that were minimalist and modern and perfectly suited to machine production.
