About MeOn 24 March 1916, the passenger ferry 'Sussex', on route from Folkstone to Dieppe, was torpedoed with the loss of 50 lives. The badly damaged hull was towed onto the sands at Le Portel. McBey was stationed nearby at Boulogne and made his way to the scene two days later, writing in his diary, "Worked all morning, then we set out and took car to Le Portel. Then walked along in big wind along country road resembling Scotland ....Then to beach where boats laid up. Fine place." McBey depicts the heroic hull in a halo of evening light. Curious onlookers have gathered to view the recovery operation.
