About MeThe earliest cars were usually open vehicles, so ladies in large feather-laden picture hats wore enormously long silk or chiffon veils. These were pinned over the hats, wrapped around the head and face, and tied in a bow under the chin. This not only prevented the hat from blowing off, but also protected the motorist from dust rising from the untarred roads still in existence at the turn of the century.
