About MeThis portrait of Hope Macdonald was painted by Hugh Cameron, who was a favoured artist of her husband, granite merchant and collector of art, Alexander Macdonald. Mrs Macdonald outlived her husband by sixteen years and during this period she continued to add to his collection of artists' portraits, although Hugh Cameron's portrait was never included.

Hope's only son died when still a child and the Macdonald collection was bequeathed to Aberdeen Art Gallery, along with a sum of money which was to be used for contemporary art: Macdonald had enjoyed his interaction with artists and wished for it to continue through the purchase of contemporary art for the collections. Certainly Mrs Macdonald continued this practice and corresponded with several artists whose work she wished to acquire, including John Singer Sargent. Hope Macdonald died in 1900 and the following year the Macdonald collection came to Aberdeen Art Gallery, where it has remained ever since.

More About Me

The small splashes of red in her lips and on the flower really catch your eye.
