About MeThe Borghese Palace and Gardens were built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 17th century and were a fashionable haunt for 'Grand Tourists' in the 18th century. Giles, however, shows the Gardens more as a peaceful retreat, where the foreground group of peasant women converse and a monk ambles in the sunlight. The composition of this painting was based on a sketch that Giles made of the trees to the left of the picture (ABDAG 10862).
