About MeDavid Artz was a pupil of Jozef Israels and a close friend of the Aberdeen artist George Reid. This painting is a modern interpretation of a traditional Dutch theme, which was developed by Hague School artists who went on to have an important influence on their Scottish contemporaries.

Although painted in Paris, Artz has recreated a Dutch scene and was known to have a trunk of traditional Dutch clothes in his Paris studio.
