About MeFarquharson lived on the family estate at Finzean near Banchory. He ran the estate in partnership with his brother Robert until his brother's death in 1918 when Joseph in turn became laird. The estate and surrounding countryside were the inspiration behind much of Farquharson's work. At the time this work was painted his brother Robert, was M.P. for West Aberdeenshire, and proposed an amendment to a Grouse Bill allowing farmers to shoot grouse which were destroying their harvest fields. Farquharson's painting shows the grouse ravaging corn stooks. It seems likely that the work was done as a comment in support of his brother's cause.
