About MeRobert Herdman trained in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder. By the mid 1860s he was painting Scottish historical and genre subjects. This image of a young peasant girl is typical of his choice of subject matter . The young gleaner takes a rest from her labour. In spite of her tattered clothes she appears healthy and beautiful. She represents a Victorian, romantic vision of the poor.
