About MeGeorges Lacombe's mother was a talented artist who imbued in her son a love of nature, which was to remain with him for the rest of his life. The Nabis artists Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier also had a marked effect on Lacombe's paintings, which came to exhibit the sinuous lines and mysterious undertones of Symbolist art. With its curving forms and rich colour, the Forest of Écouves became Lacombe's favoured source. Here broad, circular areas of dark paint frame the scene. The mossy knoll forms a rounded circle, its surface encrusted with jewel-like colours - turquoise, emerald and ultramarine - which contrast with the warm, coppery tones of the undergrowth.

The title of this work "Sois-Bois" translates to ‘undergrowth’. Imagine yourself in this painting – what can you smell? What season do you think it is?
