About MeStoneware large slim bottle with flattened sides rising to a broad everted and flattened circular rim. It is glazed in a reddish-brown iron glaze, pale green ash glaze and thick black celadon glaze which has been allowed to dribble and pool irregularly on the exterior. There is also a band of brown-black celadon around the foot.
Richard Batterham trained at the Leach Pottery with Bernard Leach before establishing his own pottery in Dorset in 1959. He preferred to work alone, overseeing all aspects of making ceramics, including making his own stoneware clay. He specialised in pale green coloured wood-ash glazes and rich dark iron glazes and made no distinction between the domestic wares for everyday use and his large decorative objects.
