About MeStoneware small caddy with barrel-shaped body and flush fitted domed cover which rises to a shallow pointed apex.

Both pieces are glazed in a pale green ash glaze and celadon, creating a mottled effect on the cover. The body is also glazed in a dark, almost black iron glaze (tenmoku) over a iron mid-brown glaze. The glazes are streaked to create a random pattern of vertical bands which stop at the foot.

Batterham trained at the Leach Pottery with Bernard Leach before establishing his own pottery in Dorset in 1959. He preferred to work alone, overseeing all aspects of making ceramics, including making his own stoneware clay. He specialised in pale green coloured wood-ash glazes and rich dark iron glazes and made no distinction between the domestic wares for everyday use and his large decorative objects.
