About MeStoneware medium jug with almost straight sided body rising to a concave neck from a central rib. Pulled and flattened double rim with wide lip. Strap handle pulled from below the rim and terminating mid body. Appears to thrown in two pieces, joined at the central rib before the handle was added.

Glazed all over in a pale green ash glaze over a mid-brown glaze, possibly manganese, which shows through the ash glaze, giving a speckled appearance. Dark khaki green celadon glaze is brushed over the ash glaze, pooling around the rim, handle and central rib.

Batterham trained at the Leach Pottery with Bernard Leach before establishing his own pottery in Dorset in 1959. He preferred to work alone, overseeing all aspects of making ceramics, including making his own stoneware clay. He specialised in pale green coloured wood-ash glazes and rich dark iron glazes and made no distinction between the domestic wares for everyday use and his large decorative objects.
