About MeStoneware large fluted caddy with barrel-shaped body and flush fitted cover. The caddy is glazed in a pale green celadon which has pooled in the fluted ribs, creating darker stripes.
Richard Batterham called his lidded storage containers 'caddies'. He made them in a variety of sizes and with differing glaze treatments throughout his career. The ribbing on this example was applied to the clay body before the wood ash glaze was applied, allowing the glaze to pool in the ribs.
Batterham trained at the Leach Pottery with Bernard Leach before establishing his own pottery in Dorset in 1959. He preferred to work alone, overseeing all aspects of making ceramics, including making his own stoneware clay. He specialised in pale green coloured wood-ash glazes and rich dark iron glazes and made no distinction between the domestic wares for everyday use and his large decorative objects.
