  • The Romans Building Manchester
About MeFord Madox Brown was not a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but adopted some of their principles and shared the derision from which they suffered.

This is a cartoon for the murals of Manchester Town Hall. A centurion holds a plan of the fort whilst his general gives orders. The Roman legionaries do the skilled masons' work, whilst the Britons take on the labourers' job carrying stones and cement. To the right, the general's wife and son have stepped onto the ramparts and the little boy aims a kick at one of the litter bearers.

More About Me

A cartoon for a mural which Brown painted in Manchester's Town Hall, one of a series of 12 works by the artist in the building's Great Hall.
