About MeWalter C. Horsley was the son of the well-known Royal Academician, J. C. Horsley. He worked as both an artist and a war correspondent. His reputation was established in 1877 with a painting called 'The Hour of Prayer', of which this watercolour sketch is a study. Horsley was a popular artist and his work was often accepted to hang at the Royal Academy in London and also illustrated in a well known London newspaper.

This scene, of sailors praying on Turkish ironclad ship. As well as such scenes of modern warfare he also painted historical subjects but these too were set abroad, often in Egypt.
