About MeKing Edward I or II silver penny belonging to Aberdeen's St Nicholas Street hoard. Found in 1984, this hoard comprises 2538 coins, including coins from England, Scotland, Ireland and the continent, as well as 54 imitation coins.Coin Type: Penny, Class 10 cf2
Coin Issuer: Edward I or II
Date Minted: 1306-1307
Mint Location: London
Find Date: 1984
Obverse: Forward facing crowned head with broad, curling hair framed with text inscription.
Reverse: Centrally placed long cross with three pellets in each corner and text ringing the outer edge.
Manufacture Method: Hammered
Condition: The reverse is in fair condition, with clear details, legible text and some doubling over 'TAS LON'. The obverse is in worse condition, with large marks running across from the cross on the reverse side and a smoothed king portrait. There is an error after the inscription's '+' where what should be an 'E' appears to be a 'C'. This could mean this is a forgery, but nothing else is incorrect, suggesting that it is more to do with a poorly worn and recut die, than it being an imitation. The coin has also been clipped.
