About Me
King Edward II imitation silver penny belonging to Aberdeen's St Nicholas Street hoard. Found in 1984, this hoard comprises 2538 coins, including coins from England, Scotland, Ireland and the continent, as well as 54 imitation coins.

Coin Type: Penny, Forgery
Coin Issuer: Unknown forger
Date Minted: 1307-1309
Mint Location: Unknown, but claims to be minted in London
Find Date: 1984
Obverse: Forward facing crowned head with broad, curling hair framed with text inscription.
Reverse: Centrally placed long cross with three pellets in each corner and text ringing the outer edge.
Manufacture Method: Hammered
Condition: The coin is in poor condition. It is a forgery of legitimate Edward II sterling pennies Class 10 cf3. The reverse has worn, but still visible central details and legible text. The obverse has a almost completely worn king portrait, with a visible bifoliate class 10 cf3 crown and mostly legible text. The obverse inscription is incorrect for legitimate coins of this period, and features outdated barred 'A' and unbarred 'N' letter forms. The coin also has a 3mm split formed above the king portrait.
