About MeIn Spain, John Phillip absorbed the flavour and colour of the country and its people and was also inspired by Spanish art: this work reveals a great debt to early Spanish masters, most notably to Velázquez.

The sitter peers glumly out of the shadowy scene. She is expertly painted - each wrinkle on her haggard face and neck is picked out by the artist's unstinting brushwork. Though her mouth is closed, it is obvious that she has few, if any, teeth left. Her former beauty - suggested by her low-cut dress and earrings - has long since passed.

More About Me

Absorbing the colour and spirit of Spain on his visits, Phillip's work also owes debts to earlier local masters, notably Velasquez.
