About MeCafé Chantant was an extremely popular subject with Impressionist painters who often chose to paint such cheerful, everyday scenes of the Parisian world of entertainment. Artists such as Degas, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec could be regularly found looking for inspiration in restaurants, cafés and night clubs. This picture depicts the audience listening to a female singer in a café. Lessore’s imitation of Sickert’s style; the simplification of form and shorthand definition of the figures is evident in this work. Like Sickert, Lessore is more interested in the audience than the theatrical performance: they form ‘centre stage’ in this composition, whilst the singer in merely reflected in the background on a mirror behind the two seated women.
More About Me
Cafe scenes were popular amongst the Impressionists, who often concentrated as here on the audience rather than the performer
