About MeIn the 19th century the Dutch School of painting enjoyed a resurgence and Netherlandish painter Josef Israels was at the forefront of the new 'Hague School'. Israels recuperated from an illness in a small fishing village at Scheveningen and it was there that he became a painter of everyday life, portraying the lives and trials of the poor villagers. Inspired by the work of Rembrandt, Israels used lighting and sombre tones to express human sympathy - in this case, for the sickness of an old woman.
