About MeEdwin Long was an English academic artist who at first practiced as a portrait painter but in his later work, following a visit to Egypt and Syria in 1874, he embraced sensual Orientalist scenes.A friend of John Phillip RA, Long accompanied him to Spain, where they spent much time. Like Phillip, Long was greatly influenced by the paintings of Velasquez and other Spanish masters, and the resultant pictures, such as this sensitive portrayal of a Spanish girl praying, were painted under Spanish influence.
