About MeArthur Hughes studied under Alfred Stevens and turned to Pre-Raphaelitism in 1850 when he met William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown.

The influence of the Pre-Raphaelites can be seen in this painting in the detailed depiction of the wild flowers in the foreground and the rich colouring - particularly the brilliant turquoise sky.

The donor, Winifred, Lady Troup, was a daughter of the author George MacDonald. Hughes and MacDonald were friends and another of MacDonald's daughters, Mary was engaged to marry Hughes' nephew Ted, who was also an artist. Sadly Mary died shortly before the planned wedding in 1878.
More About Me
Hughes turned to Pre-Raphaelitism after meeting some of its exponents: the style is evident here in the detail of the wildflowers and the rich colours, especially of the turquoise sky
